Dissatisfied with the conventional practice of teaching English mainly through what is calledintensive reading, the English Faculty of the Foreign Languages Department of Nanjing Universityproposed a skills approach, which viewed intensified training of the four language skills as the pre-dominant task at the basic stage. A controlled experiment was started in 1982. For this purposethe curriculum was redesigned on the basis of a theoretical and analytical study of the four skills.Classes were given in the forms of unitary training and comprehensive application simultaneously.The results of the experiment so far are encouraging, with the subject students making better progressthan is usually possible by using the conventional methods. However, it is admittedly far too earlyto reach any definite conclusion at the moment.
