This poper is an inquiry into the significance of foregrounded linguistic features in theinterpretation of literature. Foregrounded features are those which are meant to attract the reader's special attention. Thereare two main forms of foregrounding: that through deviation and that through parallelism. Deviationis departure from the norm, whereas parallelism is over-regularity in language use. In evaluating the semantic and stylistic functions of foregrounding two distinct yet interrelatedsteps need to be taken. The first is to compare each foregrounded feature witht the norm and see howthe creative writer has temporarily created a world which is different from ours. The second is to findout the cohesion among the foregrounded features. which seldom occur in isolation. What is of firstimportance here is to discover the pattern into which the foregrounded features are organized. It isthis pattern that gives us the clue to a better understanding of a literary work. Examples are givento illustrate the points pat forward.
