Wen Yiduo's poetry anthologies Red Candle and Stale water represent his ideological trend in which are interwoven patriotism, anti-imperialist indignation, together with his mental distress resulting from the failure to realize his ambition of bringing about a glorious future to the motherland. On these poems are impressed his exploring footprints during the Old China's long nights. Between the lines we can read his early-year mental fluctuation between hope and despair while struggling for an ideal motherland, which in turn reflects his ideological limitation imposed by his democratic thoughts. And it is this very imitation that led to his termination of poetic career right after the publication of Stale Water.
