How to Make Intensive Reading More Effective

摘要 精读也许可以看作我国学习语文的一个传统方法。过去人们学习古代诗文,总是要把一些精选出来的文章和诗词读到能背诵的程度。所谓“熟读唐诗三百首,不会吟诗也会吟”,就表明了精读的好处。直到今天,小学和中学的语文教学,在一定程度上,还沿用精读的办法,要求教师仔细讲解若干篇课文,也要求学生反复诵读,围绕课文做各种练习。 Intensive reading, as a method for learning English and a course for students of English, has re-cently incurred criticisms both at home and abroad. In a reappraisal of the course the author explainswhy it should be kept and how it should be improved. First of all, it is necessary to redefineits nature and main objective. It should aim at acquainting the student with the basic character-istics of contemporary English and showing him how English is to be studied. The selection oftexts and the method of teaching should be guided by this purpose, and there should be divisionof labour and coordination between it and extensive reading. These two reading courses comple-ment and supplement each other and will, together with other courses such as oral work, writing,and grammar, produce satisfactory results.
