This is the introduction to a study of Shakespeare's poetic language. It starts with the conditionsof the Elizabethan theatre, with its rhetoric-loving audience, the nature of English poetic drama (as con-trasted with the later, more disciplined drama of the French neoclassicists like Racine), and the evolutionof blank verse from Marlowe to Shakespeare. Passages are cited from Dr. Faustus and Troilus andCressida to show the greater flexibility and copiousness in Shakespeare's use of language. Yet he is alsoa master of emphasis and achieves his effects mainly through the use of metaphors, which reveal his worldview. Thus his insights and his imagination enrich as well as sharpen his poetic language.
