End-Focus in English and Chinese Information Structures.

This paper is a comparative study of the principles of locating the information focus in English andChinese information structures. Most of the examples analysed are translations, either from Chinese intoEnglish or from English into Chinese. They tend to show that although both languages favour the principleof saving up the most important information to the end of a sentence, it is more strictly observed in the Chi-nese sentence, in which the information focus is typically at the end.
