安达曼群岛(Andaman IS.)和尼科巴群岛(Nicobar Is。)是印度洋北部今属印度的两组岛群。它位于古代印度和东南亚及中国间海上交通的航路中。这两个岛群的岛民古代巢居野处,不衣服,生吃食物,长期过着极端落后的渔猎生活。有关这两个岛群的古代历史,现在只能从少量的七—十九世纪初中国、波斯、阿拉伯和欧洲人的航海记述中,寻找踪迹。这些航海记述比较重要的有以下几种:
Disagreeing with other writers, Mr. Xiefang argues that the geographical names Lo-ren- kuo ('the Land of the Naked', mentioned by Yijing in 672 A. D.), Lang-po-lu-si (referred to in the Xin-tang-shu, i.e., the New Annals of the Tang Dynasty), Lo-po-si (mentioned by Wang Dayuan in 1345A. D.), Cui-lan-yu (shan) (mentioned by Mahuan and others) and Ni-gu-ba-la (mentioned by Xie Qinggao in 1820 A. D.) should all be identified with the Nicobar Islands, while Yan-to-mang (mentioned by Zhao Rushi in 1225 A.D.) and An-du-mang Hills, with the Andaman Islands.
