Born in 1942 in Changding,Fujian Province,Wang Yaohua studied music from 1956 to 1961 at the Department of Arts of Fujian Normal University, where he later became a teacher after graduation. In 1970,he shifted to work as resident composer and conductor at the Fujian Provincial Peking Opera Troupe. In 1978,he returned to Fujian Normal University and has been teaching there since then.In 2001,he received Honorary Ph.D.Degree from Ryukyu University,Japan.Formerly Deputy Dean of the Department of Arts and Vice-President of the Fujian Normal University,he is currently professor of the university, member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress,Vice-Chairman of the Fujian Committee of the CPPCC,Chairman of the Fujian Committee of China Democratic League,Vice-President of Fujian Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles,President of Fujian Musicians' Association, member of the Discipline Accreditation Group of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, member of the Sports,Health and Education Division of the National Leading Group for Education and Science Planning,Council Member of the Chinese Musicians' Association, and also member of the Executive Committee of the International Council for Traditional Music(ICTM?雪 and Chairman of the ICTM Chinese Committee,President of the Asia-Pacific Society for Ethnomusicology,Vice-President of China Society for Traditional Music,Vice-President of World Ethnomusicology Society,Guest Research Fellow of Okinawa Cultural Institute of Japan University of Law,Guest Professor of the Central Conservatory of Music,Peking University College of Art and Beijing Normal University,as well as Special Research Fellow and Tutor for Ph.D.degree program of the Music Research Institute of China Academy of Arts, and member of the Examination Committee for Doctorate Dissertations at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His major academic and teaching achievements for the period between 1980's and 2006 include:engagement in 16 research projects at various levels, publication of 27 monographs and 112 papers, participation in 21 exchange programs with Japan and 12 with other countries, winner of 20 various prizes, tutorship for 27 dissertations for MA degree and 25 for Ph.D.degree. In the view of the author, the achievements of Prof.Wang can be summarized as three ″concentric circles″.The first concentric circle is that of his knowledge.Prof.Wang's learnings are of an explicit concentric circle:beginning from the local music in Fujian Province, gradually spreading to the whole country and finally reaching the whole world. His research achievements range from a general introduction to Fujian folk music, and an introduction to Chinese traditional music,to that to world ethnic music,so as to make the circle bigger and bigger. This represents his academic belief in ″making contribution to one's motherland by being based on local music while taking a broad view of the world.″ The second concentric circle is that of his personality. This circle implies something else:all the people surrounding him so highly respect him that because of his personal charms, many of his colleagues and comrades are united around himself, making progress together in terms of their research. The concentric circle of this kind has gradually been formed day by day.In the first place,in the province of Fujian,an academic circle has been formed around Prof.Wang, including his students, his colleagues and even his seniors. After this, teachers and students from all over the country as well as members of the academic community, well recognize his learnings and personality. Finally, scholars from all over the world speak highly of his teaching, research and great achievements. The third concentric circle is that of his internal world, which involves Prof.Wang's various social activities. It is widely known that that besides heavy work in music teaching and academic research,he has also been engaged in many major social activities, such as those related with the CPPCC Provincial Committee and the China Democratic Leagues. With his full dedication in all of his work, inside his internal world is a clear concentric circle, the kernel of which is knowledge-oriented,i.e.with academic research, learning and teaching as the heart of the circle, rather than position-oriented.
