Double Others:Deconstructing the Chinese Imagination of The Falling Flowers

在 2 0世纪初西方现代主义思潮的东方热情中 ,中国形象作为前现代想象中的“他者” ,表现一种怀乡恋旧的寄托与精神和谐的向往。笔者以格里菲斯的电影《落花》为典范文本 ,试图在文化研究视野内 ,解构 2 0世纪初西方有关中国的“他者”想象。揭示电影作为一种新兴艺术形式参与构筑文化大话语的功能与形式。电影既是大众神话的构筑者 ,又是大众神话的超越者 ,它同时“重复”与“重构”着某种流行文化的“套话”。

The images of China as the “cultural other”,represent the social vision of Arcadia and Utopia in the so called“Oriental Enlightenment” of Modernism. My analysis of “Broken Blossoms” by D.W.Griffith in the motion of discursive formation, shows how a film can “construct” and “deconstruct” the cultural stereotype, how the film as a new art began to serve as both a myth maker and a myth broker in mass culture.
