This paper examines the basic parsing framework and parsing procedure within an English Chinese MT system with a conclusion that the adoption of word as transfer unit limits the system's analyzing ability, and as such, this paper proposes to employ clause as the transfer unit so as to improve equivalence in the transfer operation and consequently the performance of the MT system.
