It seems that we fail to aptly appreciate the dualism that is characteristic of the ideology of the May 4th Movement: individualism vs. collective consciousness, nationalism vs.cosmopolitanism, rationalism vs.romanticism, etc.Dualism of these and other kinds has forecast the dualistic development of Chinese cultural thinking in later periods.
