Abstract This experiment studied the characteristics of the perception of isolated syllables in the children with normal hearing and mildly impaired hearing. The research examined the impact of mild impairment in hearing on the perception of isolated syllables. The result indicated that incorrect perception of sound is common in both the children with normal hearing and the children with mildly impaired hearing. The initials were those that were mistaken most frequently in sound perception. The finals were less mistaken. And the tone was least mistaken. The responses of subjects also showed that the sound perception involved processing in the brain.Comparing the responses given by the children with normal hearing with those given by the children with mildly impaired hearing,we found that the mild impairment had not made significant impact on the perception of isolated syllables.
