This paper mainly bouches upon the pessimism in Hardys poetry. The keynote in Hardys poetry is one of pessimism, but the self contradiction in his philosophical thinking prevents him from being an absolute pessimist. In fact, Hardy seems to be wavering between despair and hope most of the time. One the one hand, he grows disappointed with the harsh reality and yearns for the good old days, but on the other hand, he also believes in social evolution and cherishes hope for the future. This explains why sometimes one senses the optimistic touches in his poetry.
