AbstractSince the dancing figures painted on the basin of the Majiayao culture and on the ground of the house at Dadiwan site of the Miaodigou phase are all in silhouette,the author belivevs that pepercut silhouette in the origin of chinese figure painting.People had no interests to describe the faces of the figures because they payed attention on fecuntity and worship rather than portraying itself.The tradition of silhouette painting was replaced by the line painting in the warring States period.
