Varied Evaluations of the Boxers' Uprising since the May 4th Movement of 1919

义和团运动是开始20世纪中国历史的重大事件,不同的人们对于它的褒贬反映出他们在民族主义、爱国主义、中西文化关系、中国文化发展方向、如何评价狂热“群众运动”等一系列问题上的重大歧异和对立。由于政治形势的变化,曾经作为义和团运动尖锐批判者的五四思想家们,其立场后来经历了复杂的变化和分合,这一切都对后来中国发展道路的选择产生了显著的影响。

The Boxers' Uprising,taking place at the beginning of this century, was of great historical importance. Different people evaluate it in a different way as their views could never agree on such issues as nationalism, patriotism, the relationship between Chinese and western cultures,the orientation of Chinese cultural development, and the justification of mass movement .The thinkers of the May 4th Movement, once relentless critics of the Boxers' Uprising, began to divide among themselves and regroup into contrasting fractions. This signaled the discrepancies later occuring in the choice of roads toward a modern China.
