本文着重追问清廷创建大学堂时为何拒绝严复这位令人看来最合适的人选?以及对教育很感兴趣的严复,好不容易有了施展才华的机会,又为何急流勇退?讨论严校长的“迟到”与“早退”既指向清末民初的社会体制,也指向严复本人的气质与志趣。严校长的来去匆匆,对于北大来说当然是不幸;可对于中国思想界,却是大幸。
When the first university in modern China was established, Yan Fu was undoubtedly the best choice for presidency,, But the Qing Dynasty refused to appoint him.On the part of Yan Fu, when he finally got the appointment of Beijing University, this education - minded president did not stay long.
