AbstractThe purpose of the study was to explore the relationship between learner motivation and cognition.Secondary school EFL students were used as subjects.A motivation inventory was developed with selfefficacy,expectancy value and intrinsic motivation theories as a framework of reference.Descriptive analyses of the data reveal a low frequency of strategy use and moderate motivation potency,while analyses of variance procedures result in significant gender and grade level differences.There exist significant positive correlations between motivation peotency and strategy use frequency.To certain extent,the findings empirically verify the predictive validity of the motivation theories.
