AbstractThe present paper seeks to offer a critique of Robert Scholes' theory of reading and to explore the possibility of defining various factors that impose constraints on the reading process.After investigating Scholes' principles of centripetal reading and centrifugal reading,the author builds further protocols of reading with an emphasis on grammatical constraints on textual interpretation.
