Discovered in December 1966, the Xiaqiyuan site lies on the north bank of the Zhang River at a distance of 17.5 kilometers to the southwest of the county seat of (?)ixian, Hebei Province. It extends over a total area of about 20,000 square meters but the excavations conducted in 1974 opened up only an area of 960 square meters. The early deposits consist of the following four layers: Late Shang, Middle Shang, Early Shang and the Erlitou Cultures. The finds include ash pits, ki(?) remains and dwelling sites. In addition, there are twenty-three tombs dating from the late middle Shang. The Erlitou Culture here, which contains ding-tripods but no li-tripods, is similar to the second stage of the Erlitou Culture at Yanshi in Henan Province. The early Shang layer with its abundance of li-tripods, scarcity of ding-tripods and diversity of stemmed dou-vessels, resembles the early Shang layer at Jiangou in Handan, Hebei Province. The middle Shang layer contains many short-legged li-tripods and large stemmed dou-vessels is reminiscent of the lower Shang layer at Caoyanzhuang in Xingtai, Hebei province and the first stage of the Shang remains at Dasikong Village in Anyang. Characterized by the popularity of the practically leg less li-tripod, the late Shang layer is similar to the upper Shang layer at Caoyanzhuang in Xingtai and the fourth stage at Dasikong Village in Anyang. This is the first time that the remains of the Erlitou Culture were found in southern Hebei.
