Between October 1972 and December 1975 a total area of 1,500 square meters were excavated in seven seasons at a Neolithic site in Dahe village, six kilometers northeast of the city Zhengzhou. Because of a high water table, all the excavations were not very thorough. A total of 22 house foundations, 101 cellars, 44 tombs and 62 funerary urns are discovered. All of these have yielded a total of 1,500 pieces of complete and restorable vessels and objects of pottery, stone, bone, shell and jade.According to the data collected so far from the excavations, the Neolithic culture of Dahe village site may be assigned to six different stages. The first three stages correspond to the middle, middle-late and late periods of Yangshao culture; the fourth stage belongs to the transition from Yangshao culture to Lungshan culture; the fifth and sixth stages belong to the early and late period of Lungshan culture. Each of the six stages links and follows one after another.Among the cultural remains from the third stae, some relics bearing the characteristics of Tawenkou culture in Shandong province are discovered. Apart from such relics with the Dawenkou elements that are found among those from the fourth stage, some more relics of Chuchialing culture in Hubei province are also unearthed. All this has provided important stratigraphical relations and material objects for the study of relations between the Yangshao and Lungshan cultures in China's central plain and other cultures along the lower reaches of Huanghe River and Changjiang River valley.
