A Chinese foreign language dictionary meant for foreigners learning Chinese should not be constrained by the compiling principle and framework of a convntional Chinese dictionary.Special considerations should be given to the practical needs of foreigners learning Chinese in terms of the selection of entries,the arrangement of headwords,the division of senses,the treatment of definition,the provision of illustrative sentences,the presentation of notes and layout.Therefore,a dictionary of this kind,apart from meeting such common requirements as being scientific,standard and accurate,should cater to the special needs of the learners.To be more specific,it should be synchronic,multi functional,carefully planned and concise.
