This paper aims at a contrastive study of the lexical semantic-capacity in English and Chinese in the light of the differences between the features of word-formation and collocation.The tendency of the disyllabic word-formation in Chinese makes possible the formation of new words with new meaning and limits the Chinese lexical semantic-capacity,whereas the tendency of word-formation with old words in English enlarges the English lexical semantic-capacity.Compared with Chinese,English words are more flexible in collocation and have a stronger capability for filling the information gap.
