AbstractThe three obediences' was a feudal ethical principle for determining the status of humility and subordination of women in the family and society.Drawing on historical facts,this article analyses and theoretically explores the common practices running counter to the three obediences' in traditional society and asserts that the formation of this principle was closely associated with the heirarchical structure and conventional concepts in ancient Chinese society.According to the author of this article,economic reason,more than human relations,lay behind the discrimination against women.
