Lingual Differentiation and Cultural Integration: Multi-Lingualism among the Yao and Its Comtemporary Significance

一般而论,语言和文字是从理论上界定一个民族和在实际中凝聚一种文化的核心要素.语言和文字的改变,往往导致民族及其特定文化的变迁.如今,对于处在众多民族不断相遇、不同文化深入交往的现代世界来说,把握这一点,即把握民族语文与民族文化的特定关系,尤为重要.语言的裂变和文化的整合,是生活在强大民族包围之中和外来文化冲击之下。

The author asserts that lingual differentiation and cultural integration would usually become a dilemma for most weak or small ethnic groups surrounded and lashed by strong mainstream culture, and such a dilemma is confronting the Yao people. As an international ethnic group, the Yao's urgent problem is how to come up to ethnic identity and cultural integration beyond the differentiation in region,nationality and language. The lingual differentiation in all its manifestations and the difficulty in ethnic identity and cultural integration among the Yao people are examined in the following article through the comparative analysis of some cases.
