It is generally believed that Chinese religions are 'tolerant', but what this 'tolerance' exactly means yet remains to be explored. This article is a fairlydetailed discutsion of thit issue. It argues that before the modern times, the ortho-doxy and authority of Confucianism was virtually unshakable in the ideologicalstructure in which Confucianism played the main part while other religions playedcomplementary roles. Confucianism was highly integrated into the 'sacred order'which was its carrier and which it in turn supported ideologically. This patternis at present still exerting strong influences on both the form and speed of the mo-dernization movement of contemporary China.
