评《草叶集》的六个中译本(上)——纪念惠特曼逝世一百周年

1892年3月26日惠特曼因年迈多病与世长辟——一个伟大而平凡的人结束了具有划时代意义的文学创作生涯,也告别了一生艰难坎坷的岁月。诗人惠特曼留给后世的只有一部《草叶集》,然而这部诗集却以其进步的民主思想、自由豪放的艺术风格与博大恢宏的气度开创了世界现代诗歌的先河,对整个世界诗歌的发展进程产生了深远的影响。惠特曼逝世二十七年后,田汉于1919年7月5日发表《平民诗人惠特曼的百年祭》一文,首次将这位伟大的诗人介绍到我国,文中摘译了《草叶集》中若干首诗歌。同年12月3日,《时事新报》

The paper is particularly arranged to be in memory of the centenary of Whitman's death. The six Chinese versions provide a clear account of how the great Ameriean poet was introduced into China. This paper offers the author's comments on all the six versions which will certainly bring to our readers's attention. The second part of the paper is to be carried in the next issue.
