This article analyses why the U.S. federal government carried out the relocation program and how the program affected the urbanization of American Indians. The aim of the federal government was to lighten the burden on itself, assimilate Indians into the Majority and solve the Indian problem thoroughly. By the help of the program, more and more Indians had their social environment and skills changed. The program accelerated the process of American Indians' migration to cities, helped them to understand the urban life, fosted their urban quality, pushed forward the change of their life style, quickened the urbanization of their ideas. In a word, the relocation program speeded up the modernization of Ameriean Indians.
