摘要
此文作者花了很大功夫,比较两部共出一源但各具特色的英语词典;比较分八项进行,例证极富,辨异亦精,读了给人一种酣饱之感。1988年,两部冠以“韦氏”的词典在美国出版,它们开本相同,篇幅相当,词条排序一致,但在例句、词源、动植物学名等方面又各具特色,互分优劣。花力相同,而互有高低,可见词典编纂之难。
A methodical comparison is made of two Webster dictionaries-the New World Webster andthe Ninth Collegiate Webster. When did their parentage deviate and in what ways have theydiffered, these and such-like questions are looked into and discussed in every detail. It is foundthat each is strong (and weak) in its own way and no conclusion is drwan which side the prizegoes to.
