Uncle Tom's Cabin was the first American novel translated into classical Chinese in 1901. In 1961 it was adapted into a play in China, but the plot was quite different from the original due to the 'leftist' ideological impact. The novel was retranslated into spoken language in 1981 and then Chinese scholars began to analyse its structure, characterization, etc.
