Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn is characterized not only by its realistic narra-tion and romantic lyricism but also by its richly loaded symbols. This essay makesan analysis of two of the major symbols, the symbol of death and the symbol of theMississippi.Together with a re-examination of the relation between Huckleberry Finn,Jim and Tom,they serve to constitute an entirely new interpretation of the novel,i.e.Huck's Mississippi voyage is one for finding a spiritual home for his uneasy soul.
