This article addresses the question: to what extent a single sentence can be used to ask two or morequestions? It discusses some language-specific constraints on syntactic forms and universalconstraints on semantic interpretations multiple interrogative sentences are subject to. An in-teresting point that receives attention is the peculiarity of why as compared with other wh-wordsin lacking echo question readings and matching question readings. After reviewing some of thetheories popular in the current linguistic literature, the article develops a propositional approach,which can account, among other things, for the fact that a yes-no question and a wh-questioncannot be collapsed into one single sentence whereas a sentence containing more than one wh-question is possible.
