The victories by Mr. GeorgeBush and Mr. Michael Dukakis in the primaries show that the moderate conser-vatives and the moderate liberals now represent the main stream of the RepublicanParty and the Democratic Party respectively. There is little difference betweenBush's propositions and the Reagan Administration's current policies, while Dukakisattaches greater importance to the government's role and domestic programs, adoptsa more positive attitude towards disarmament, places greater hopes on the U. S. -
Soviet relations and emphasizes providing aids to the Third World. The current
political climate and people's mood in the United States are favourable to Dukakis,
so it is possible that the 1988 election will come to an end similar to that of the
1960 campaign.
