On the Debate Between Traditional Chinese Philosophic Ideas and Non-Chinese Ones

华夷之辩是中国传统哲学的主题之一。在不同的时代,华夷之辩的内容和形式各有不同,但其主旨基本相通,那就是如何确立中华文化的主体地位,培育民族自信心的问题。合理的华夷观应该是立足于本民族的自信心而大胆地吸收其他民族的文化精华。

The debate between Chinese and NonChinese is one of those controversial subjects in traditional Chinese philosophy. The distinction between them is quite different in different ages.Whatever forms of the debate, the gist remains more or less the same, which is to secure the principal status of Chinese culture so as to establish the selfconsciousness of the Chinese people. We should adopt proper attitudes toward Chinese and NonChinese by absorbing the essence of cultures from other nations while basing on the Chinese people’s selfconsciousness.
