The Republican Party was frustrated in the 1986 mid-term eleetion
and the“political realignment”it had expected did not happen.The strength of the
Democratic Party was somewhat restored,but some of its fundamental weak points
continued to exist.In the coming two years,the general picture of the relationship
between the two Parties Will be confrontation plus cooperation.Confronted with a
new Congress under the control of the Democrats,the Reagan Administration will
have to make some compromises and readjustments on certain issues,but its basic policies
are not to change.
