The mechanism of traditional massage was studied by observing changes in blood flow in the lower limbs with the impedence rheographic method.Increases of blood flow amounting to 0.8 and 0.56 ml per min per 100 ml of limb volume(both p<@0.01) were found in males and females respectively immediately after they had been massaged on the head. Fifteen minutes later, the quanity of blood flow became normal again. Although there was a warm feeling in the legs during the massage operation, no significant change was found in the cutaneous temperature in that area. Results of the study suggested that:1. The increase of blood flow in the lower limbs was due to the stimulation of acupuncture points on the head, which helped to clear the main and collateral channels in the body through which vital energy circulates, thereby regulating the functions of the whole system.2. The motor area of the cerebral cortex beneath the massaged region was indirectly stimulated, which led to vasomotorial action in the limbs.3. Head-massage can be used as a means of rehabilitation for those suffering from celebral thrombosis and peripheral vascular disease, and as a method for promoting health.
