摘要 1984年是美国的总统选举年,目前民主、共和两党正就总统选举展开激烈竞争。两党党内各派力量的消长与意向如何?各阶层选民的态度怎样?本文拟作一些浅析。 A Keen competition is now beginning to get up steam between the two contending sides for the American presidential election late this year. Notwithstanding its massive supporters among the middle and lower classes, for all its morale-boosting efforts after the 1980 election defeat, up to this writing, the faction-ridden Democratic Party still fails to reach a consensus on a popular condidate or an attractive election platform. As it is, it would seem to be an uphill fight for the Democrats to stage a comeback this winter. On the other hand, it seems recent events augur well for President Ronald Reagan's bid for re-election. Blessed with sure rosy signs on the economic horizon, the Reagan administration has captivated the now buoyant big business circles and heartened somewhat the middle classes after weathering a most serious post-war crisis. Besides, there appear to be some interesting changes in President Reagan's power base: right wing forces, both old and new, seem to be on the wane, whereas the restraining influence of the moderates appear to be rising with each passing day, thereby playing an ever-mounting role in the decision-making process-Meanwhile, some of president Reagan's domestic policies, drastic cutbacks on welfare expenditures in particular, have aroused strong feelings among the grass roots. All the above-mentioned factors may influence the election results. Overall, things look favorable for Reagan's re-election, yet some uncertainties still remain and make no plain sailing.
