摘要
动词不定式与动名词是英语动词的两个非谓语形式,都具有名词的性质,可以作句子的主语、宾语或表语。动词不定式和“介词+动名词”还具有形容词和副词的性质,可以作定语或状语。但这两种形式在搭配和意义上有同有异。本文想就这方面的问题作一些概括和说明。
The infinitive and the gerund both share the characteristics of a noun. They can function as the subject, object or predicative of a sentence. The infinitive and the 'preposition+gerund' construction can also performthe duties of an adjective or an adverb. This paper sets out to investigate the similarity and dissimilaritybetween these two non-finite verb forms in their collocation and meaning (general or particular, active orpassive, accomplished or prospective, etc.). An especially detailed comparison is made between some groupsof synonyms and pairs of antonyms (such as refuse and decline, succeed and fail, etc.) in their collocationswith the infinitive or the gerund and the resulting difference in meaning. It is shown that semantically relat-ed lexemes can behave quite differently, a fact which points up the necessity of dealing with English verbusage case by case.
