The Trends Towards Synthesis and Pluralism in Foreign Language Teaching

摘要 近些年来,随着世界社会经济、科学技术和文化的发展,语言学和语言教学法也有了显著的发展变化。各种语言学派和以各派语言学理论为指导思想的外语教学法先后应运而生。这些教学法的作用各有千秋,在不同的范围内、不同的情况下,各自都可取得一定的效果。因此。 This is a review of some tendencies in the recent developments of language teaching methodology. Oneincreasing tendency is towards synthesis, or emphasis on assimilating anything that is positive in the variousapproaches while avoiding all their shortcomings. Another tendency is towards pluralism, which expressesitself in diversifying methods and techniques and accommodating them to the specific requirements of eachteaching-learning situation. The audio-lingual method, with its emphasis on 'listening and speaking playingthe predominant role and preceding reading and writing,' is subjected to a detailed analysis and shown tobe inadequate to ensure satisfactory results. Experimental data and results of theoretical research both pointto the necessity of parallel and concerted development of all the four basic skills. Special attention is calledto the important role which reading can play both as a target skill and as one form of learning activity.
