听说课使用国外出版的教材已有相当长一个时期。这些教材有什么特点?如何使用才能达到“为我所用”的目的?这里我们谈几点初步的想法。 近十多年来英语国家为英语作为第二语言教学出版了大量的听说教材。例如:L.G.Alexander,1977,Question and Answer, Longman.
This paper examines the strengths and weaknesses of some British and American books for teaching aural comprehension and conversational English and discusses how to use them in a class of Chinese students. The books under investigation share the following characteristics: a wide range of topics, a variety of styles and registers, a fair presentation of the linguistic features of spoken English and exercises designedfor specific purposes. But the topics are mostly removed from Chinese reality and the books are often lackingin material which stimulates Chinese students and involves them actively in speaking. It is important, therefore,to use the material selectively. Experience shows that interesting material roughly at the students' levelbrings good results. Much of the success also depends on how such material is handled in class. It is necessary for theeacher to keep the learner in focus and let him work on his own as much as possible. Rote memory workshould be minimized though interesting drills m elp students learn. Whatever the teacher does should be aimed at cultivating the students' communicative competence.
