The art of letters in ancient Greece was controlled by a small elite who couldread and write, while most ordinary freemen, let alone slaves, were illiterate. However,we are now living in a highly civilized and sophiscated age, in which reading hasbecome everybody’s business. Both in towns and in the country, new libraries arespringing up here and there; publications keep pouring in. People in modern society,men and women, old and young, are confronted with the necessity of reading.
