摘要 The art of letters in ancient Greece was controlled by a small elite who couldread and write, while most ordinary freemen, let alone slaves, were illiterate. However,we are now living in a highly civilized and sophiscated age, in which reading hasbecome everybody’s business. Both in towns and in the country, new libraries arespringing up here and there; publications keep pouring in. People in modern society,men and women, old and young, are confronted with the necessity of reading. To bewell informed about what is going on both at home and abroad, we have to keep inconstant touch with all kinds of newspapers. To find a satisfactory job, we are
