A tomb of the Spring and Autumn Period was discovered and excavated at Jiulidun, Shucheng County, Anhui Province in September 1980.The tomb pit is 8.60 meters long and 4.44 meters wide with an east-west orientation of 120 degrees and has a depth of 2.7 meters. The south-eastern part of the pit was damaged. The bottom of the grave is floored with wood planks, and the coffin and all the funerary objects were placed upon it. The coffin is completely rotten. There are evidence that the tombs had been robbed twice before, but still as many as 183 pieces of funerary objects were found in it, including over 170 bronzes. The bronzes found in this tomb are another important batch of bronzes in the province since the finds of the Cai Hou tomb in 1955. The bronze drum stand among them is a very rare bronze article, for it has a cast inscription of 150 Chinese characters in two rows around its dody. The first row contains 98 words, and the second one 52. There is also a halberd bearing the inscription of inlaid gold: 'Halberd used by Cai——'. The style of the words is identical with that of the words on the bronzes of the Cai Hou tomb. A careful study of some of the inscriptions shows the possibility that the tomb owner is probably a prince of the states of the Shu people (舒) in the late Sping and Autumn Period. This also means that there had been cultural exchanges between the Shu and the Cai states. These bronze articles with their inscriptions are new source material for studying the history of the Shu people.
