A Look at Jiao Mu’s Banishing Her Daughter-in-law As Depicted in The Peacock Flies to Southeast from the Perspective of Social Roles

在乐府诗《孔雀东南飞》中的焦母因有恋子情结而遣弃兰芝这一观点已经深入人心的今天,笔者在梳理文献的过程中却发现:威姑决断着子妇的去留。

As was depicted in The Peacock Flies to Southeast,Liu Lanzhi,the wife of Jiao Zhongqing who was a low official of Lu-jiang County,was banished by her mother-in-law.The idea has taken hold that Liu Lanzhi’ s tragic ending was largely attributable to the Jocasta complex possessed by Jiao Zhongqing’s mother,known as Jiao Mu.Based on a careful review of The Peacock Flies to Southeast and related articles,it is found that tyrannical mother-in-laws tend to exercise complete authority over the household and thereby shape the destiny of their daughter-in-laws.
