By employing homely language and confessional narrative,Robert Lowell,a representative of the confes- sional school in the 1950s,tells a kind of American life of belief crisis and spiritual wasteland in the Unite States. In the poem,the poet presents a thirsting and de-spiritualized world,and in particular,the poet gives a lash against the furious,fickle and fallen life of the time,while confessing his depression and distress in his mind.
