Proverbs, the building units of a language, have been accepted and put to use by people with their concise, short, humorous, witty and philosophical characteristics. As one of the basic tools for inheriting and documenting culture and language, they play an important role in people's daily lives. On the other hand, proverbs are constrained by their unique historical and cultural backgrounds, and to some extent reflect specific geography, history, customs and other cultural information. By analyzing Man proposes, God disposes and “谋事在人,成事在天”, this essay discusses the social background of their origin and significance and reiterates the basic viewpoint that both Chinese and English proverbs have cultural connotation.
