Abstract This article examines the military treaties and agreements between Britain and her colonies and protectorates of former colonies and protectorates in the course of British post war imperial retreat.The signing of such treaties and agreements was largely the precondition for British recognition of independence for the colonies or protectorates.It was advantageous to the maintenance of Britain's established links with and economic interests in the newly independent countries.It helped to maintain British international strategic status.The treaties and agreements also enabled Britain to influence the armed forces,and to interfere in the internal affairs of the newly independent countries.They were a component of British strategy of decolonization and played an important part in the transition from colonialism to neocolonialism.
