Macbeth is a very modern play, from the point of view of a very important constituent of Modernism-the Freudian concept of humanity. The tragic hero's personality is not a unified whole dominated by reason or romantic passion,as in Classicism or Romanticism, but a dynamic system constituted by conflicting forces. under the sway of evil forces,it loses its equilibrium, which leads to the final destruction of the tragic hero. This explains the tragedy of Macbeth, whose obvious 'evilness' puts him in sharp contrast to 'good'heroes like Hamlet or King Lear.
