The tombs in question are M8 and M31,occupied by a couple,in the cemetery of the Marquises of Jin at Beizhao,Quwo in Shanxi. One of them yielded two sets of bronzes ins- cribed with names((木鱼) and (臣斤))of two marquises of Jin respectively. Therefore, the tomb belonged to a marquis of Jin,or more precisely,Marquise Xianhou by the name of Su. The sixteen bells of Su(of them fourteen were smuggled to Hong Kong but acquired by the Shanghai Museum later) bear the inscription that can date them to the 33rd year of the King Li' s reign period of the Zhou dynasty. The (臣斤) in the inscription refers to 司徒,an alias of Su. The occupant of the tombs is Su who died in the 29th year of King Xuan' s reign period(B. C. 799)and was buried in the same year or one year later. His tomb furniture includes one tomb chamber and two coffins. And the interred ritual bronzes includes five ding-tripods and four gui-vessels, something attributed to the daifu rank. The three ding-tripods plus two gui-vessels found in his wife's tomb were typical of a rank immediately below daifu, and could be used by a shi in certain occassion. The jade articles that covered the bodies of the couple shed much light on the then system of the use of jade.
