Abstract There are two factions within the current Islamic rejuvenation movement: the mainstream faction and the extremist faction. Although the political violences of the extremists only account for a small part of the contemporary Islamic rejuvenation movement, they have however very great repercussions. The forms and symbols they adopt are traditional and religious, but the content and meaning they carry are modern and political. Under the name of Islam, they try to cleanse the secular society with Islamic fundementalism, oppose the unjust rulers, and resist against the power politics and hegemony of the West. The Islamic political violences are activities well organized, well planned and with a purpose, their targets mainly pointing to Israel and the Western nations which are the behind supporters of some secular governments; these violences have produced strong shocks on international politics. In recent years, the Islamic violent activities of terror have tended to spread into the hinterland of both Europe and America, threatening directly the security of the Western countries. Owing to the fact that the targets of attack and operation often extended to the innocent, the political violences of the Islamic extremists are increasingly being condemned by the common people.
