Based on Sperber and Wilson's relevance theory of communication, this paper argues that interpreting an utterance is crucially a process of cognitive inference instead of a mere process of decoding. It involves seeing and understanding the contextual effects of the utterance which are both motivated and conditioned by the seeking of maximum relevance in the dynamic progression of the discourse.
