Abstract The author of this paper argues that suprasentential unity is essentially the smallest unity of meaning, structure and usage. It lies at the joint point of syntax and rhetoric, of syntax and composition theory and technique, and of syntax and discourse linguistics. Therefore it should be taken as a common object of studies of these disciplines.
